Biodesign-in-flux
A living document by wezzie of research, experiments, and thoughts whilst completing MA Biodesign @CSM

my creative process encompasses: research → realisation → reflection. my scientific and ux background means i start with research, i spend a lot of time in the evidence before touching anything. realisation is the doing: experiments, iterations, prototypes. reflection is where i weigh up my work to my other disciplines, and explore the implications of my work.

Our human perception correlates directly with the turbidity of the water
reflection
i initially thought the water theme was a bit boring but it was the perfect theme to start the course. i found this comfortable because of the lab aspect, i really enjoyed exploring Arduino for the first time and it really opened my eyes to bio hardware. i found the lack of definitiveness frustrating, every group's presentation was different and the feedback overall felt fluffy, but that's probably because scientific feedback is a lot more binary. this made me realise the creative and artistic side will be a big mental shift for me.

reflections
brief
This was a reflective project, exploring the symbiosis of life from planets to microorganisms. i produced a mixed media journal.

This is a snippet from my journal
“Symbiosis. I think that ultimately all we want, successfully co-emergance with other living things. Humans co-emergant with plants when they release oxygen and we exhale carbon dioxide, I guess in one way we couldn’t live without one another. I have attached this note I created in labs which highlighted how systems create suger, which all living things need sugar. Plants are autotrophs and use carbon to create sugar, oxygen is a byproduct of the plants process. Humans and heterotrophs and have to use plants sugar, we also use the byproduct to survive (oxygen). On a macro scale we experience co emergence everyday with each other. I find it so interesting how much more lonelier humans have become, we are so hyper independent. Community is so important and I see it a lot in my dad’s generation. Everyone wants a village but no one wants to be a villager, growing up, I used to mock my dad because he is everyone go to person for airport trips, I used to find it really annoying. It wasn’t until my dad surprise birthday party when people were doing speeches about how much they impacted their lives, I saw how many people volunteered their time, money and effort to make food, decorate and show up. It was one day but it really inconvenience yourself, going even when you don’t feel like it. Until that day I was always against leading with that approach because I think it’s so easy to be taken advantage of but so what? If one person takes advantage of you out of 20, so what? It reflect poorly on them that it does on me. The fear of being taken advantage of by people that quite frankly are awful shouldn’t stop me from living life as a cheerful villager.”
